The predecessor of the IPMB, as it exists today, was founded in Karlsruhe in 1946.
In 1973, the then separate institutes were relocated to Heidelberg by decision of the state parliament in order to continue the research work there in the Neuenheimer Feld.
In 2002, the Institutes of “Pharmaceutical Chemistry”, “Pharmaceutical Biology” and “Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy” were merged to form the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology.
In 2023, the IPMB moved within the university from the Faculty of Biosciences to the newly founded Faculty of Engineering.
